Did You Ever Eat a Flower?
By Lucinda Rudin, AHS Vice President Education and Outreach
While different plant parts are used as herbs, flowers have played a significant role in the medicinal arts of many cultures. This year’s herb of the year is the Viola, a group of plants that includes violets, pansies, and violas. Lucinda described what they have to offer as well as touching on other flowering herbs and their role in cuisine, medicine, and perfumery.

Landscaping with Herbs
By Judith Craft, Bonnie Orr, AHS Garden Team
The best time to consider incorporating herb plants into your landscape is in the spring. Choose culinary and medical herbs used most often to meet all your needs. Nothing is more aromatic and delicious than fresh cut sprigs from the garden carried right into the kitchen. Spectacular side effects may occur when you use herbs in the landscape: a dramatic increase in butterfly and other pollinator activity, and increased motivation to walk outside more often, take long deep breaths, and smile.
